Looking after your leather furniture will ensure that you get the most out of your gorgeous new recliner chairs and sofas for years to come.

Positioning Points to Remember

First of all please ensure that your leather furniture is kept out of direct sunlight as this can potentially fade the natural colour of the hide.  If you can’t avoid sunlight in the area of the room that you are placing your suite in, you could consider laying a throw over the furniture when it is not in use.  There are lots of lovely throws to be found and they give a modern, homely feel to your room, teamed with a nice colourful cushion, you can have lots of fun adding touches of colour to your home.  Also something to consider when deciding where to place your furniture, is where your radiators are.  Please keep your furniture at least 12 inches away from any radiators.

Clean and Simple

The best way to clean your leather furniture is to simply vacuum it on a regular basis and dust it with a clean soft cloth. Don’t use any detergents or detergent solutions or wet wipes to clean your furniture.  A suitable neutral leather cream can be applied to restore the sheen on leather but always follow manufacturers instructions. If you’re not sure, always try it out on a small hidden part of the chair/sofa first. If necessary a damp (but not very wet) cloth can be used to wipe the furniture using soft, circular movements to clean any dirty marks that may have arisen.  Don’t rub the leather hard and repeatedly as this can cause damage to it.  Dry straight away with a clean soft cloth or let it dry naturally.  Any accidental spillages should be cleaned and dried immediately with a soft clean cloth, again without rubbing but dabbed to absorb all the liquid.

Damage Limitation

Items such as hair spray, body creams and hair gel etc can discolour leather, as can perspiration.  You may notice this more on the backs of chairs/sofas and the arms.  Regular cleaning will remove any build up, however fabric chair back protectors and arm caps are available to protect your furniture.  Alternatively you can purchase a 5 year Furniture Protection Care Plan, which covers both leather and fabric furniture, details are available on our website.  Another thing to remember is that ink from newspapers can rub off onto leather and cause discolouration, therefore it is advisable not to leave newspapers on your leather furniture.  Also denim, particularly when new, can leave colour behind on your furniture, so prolonged contact is not advisable. If you have a cat or dog, remember that they have sharp claws and can damage leather furniture as can the oils from their coats.

Leather’s Uniqueness

Leather is a natural material and can have varying marks and characteristics.  Therefore, due to different hides being used for different pieces of furniture, no two pieces can be totally identical.  Natural marks can be caused by insect bites, healing scars, veins, growth marks and creases etc. These all give leather its natural character and add to the uniqueness of each piece of furniture.  As the products age, variation of shade will appear on each piece as the leather mellows.  Leather can stretch and crease in the first weeks of being used, you may notice this in the seat and the back of the chair.
